Astrid Viana Groth holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Performance from Marymount College in New York and a Master of Music from the University of New Mexico where she is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.
She has studied with renowned teachers in South America, Italy and the U.S. Her teacher in Costa Rica was Guillermo Aguilar Machado, concert pianist and graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. In New York her teachers were Wolfgang Schanzer and Seymour Lipkin. In Italy she studied with Orazio Frugoni at Villa Schifanoia in Florence and in Albuquerque with Ralph Berkowitz, Morton Schoenfeld and Lois McLeod.
Ms. Groth has performed as a soloist and collaborative artist throughout New Mexico. Her work has included solo and chamber recitals in Keller Hall at the University of New Mexico, performances with the NMSO Woodwind Quintet, the UNM Composer Symposium, Albuquerque Chamber Soloists, Chamber Orchestra of Albuquerque, Bosque Chamber Music Society and the Musica de Camara Orchestra in Santa Fe.
She is a MTNA Nationally Certified Teacher of Music, Past-President of the Professional Music Teachers of New Mexico and President of the Albuquerque Music Teachers Association. In 2006 she was named PMTNM Teacher of the Year.
Ms. Groth has been a Lecturer in the University of New Mexico Music Department and has been an Independent piano teacher for 30 years.
She has been invited to adjudicate many important competitions and has coached and performed with many Chamber groups.
In the last 20 years she has taken on many duties and positions, organizing Competitions, PMTNM State Conferences and Workshops. She has been the Chair of the MTNA Southwest Division Collegiate Auditions, Chair of the MTNA NM State Junior and Senior Auditions and the Honors Auditions in Albuquerque.
Many of her students have won District and State Competitions and have gone on to study music at important universities: Stanford, Oberlin, New York University, Manhattan School of Music as well as New Mexico State and University of New Mexico.
