Melyssa Garland is a New Mexico native, who currently resides in New Mexico. Classically trained in piano, from the age of 5, she won the NM State Honors Piano Competition in 1991. She studied piano and composition at the University of New Mexico, and began teaching piano in 1997. Her passion for travel and world music has taken her to over 20 countries around the globe, where she has both performed and gleaned inspiration for her piano and orchestral music.
She has scored a feature film, Ink: A Tale of Captivity(2010) a short film, Get Your Hair Back (2006) and a music video, Mexica(2009), as well as written original music for the 6-part documentary series, Curandera (2007-2008) and Drive-by-Shakespeare: Shakespeare’s Women(2010). These films have been well received at the Santa Fe Film Festival, East L.A. Chicano Film Festival, Tupelo Film Festival and White Sands International Film Festival. Her compositions range from haunting piano melodies to native American and Mexican influenced instrumental dances to baroque orchestral music.
